The first show of a busy weekend for NSMC (and a number of other local model clubs!) involved a short trip north on the A34 to Abingdon for the 12th Abingdon IMPS Model Show, held as usual at Larkmead School.

The show has recently expanded and now fills two large halls (the main hall and gym) as well as a separate room for the competition. NSMC were in the gym, along with Early Risers, West Middlesex, F-4 Phantom SIG, Southbrook, Thames Valley, Poole Vikings, Wallingford and Salisbury. The Abingdon IMPS team were really on top of the game with lots of help in the car park and plenty of maps and guidance as to where we needed to set up.

Club members Ian Shumsky, Richard Dawes and Ian Sheppard manned the tables, displaying a selection of their own models as well as some of Bill Gregory and Ian Reece‘s builds. We were expecting Dave Atkinson as well, but unfortunately something came up at the last moment and he was unable to attend. Once we had the display up, a quick trip to the catering van was rewarded by a fantastic egg and sausage bap which set us all up for the morning.

As you can see in the show photos there were many fine models on display and the entries to the competition were excellent. Dominating the competition room was a 1/24 scale scratch built mobile crane and while this literally overshadowed the other entries the quality of the other builds was evident. Faced with such stiff competition Ian Sheppard was delighted to win 1st and 2nd prize in the Class 4 / Military Vehicles group and a 3rd prize in the Class 10 / Diorama group.

The show felt moderately busy and there was a steady stream of visitors walking through the halls. As well as catching up with Club member Ian Reece and speaking with our friends in the local clubs, we were kept quite busy talking about our models and the techniques used. Despite that, we all found some time to check the many traders and pick up a kit or two. It was a really enjoyable day at end of the show we were asked back to next year’s event, an invite we eagerly accepted.

Once again, thank you to Abingdon IMPS for a great show and a really enjoyable day.
