The second half of our show weekend took NSMC to the biennial Baughurt Model & Craft Show. Baughurt, organised by the Aldermaston Air Cadets, is a very different event from the Abingdon IPMS show in that it covers a wide range of models, from railways, though plastic models and steam engines to remote controlled aircraft. In many ways it is a similar event to Cholsey Model Mania with a little something for everyone.

NSMC had been allocated an daunting 9 tables, but with a good number of members attending the show this was easily filled with a wide selection of aircraft and military vehicles. As well as committee members Ian Shumsky, Bill Brignal and Richard Dawes in attendance, John Cooper, Bill Gregory and Bill’s wife were able to make the show. Unfortunately Rowley Bartlett was unable to attend due to a family emergency and our thoughts are with him. We also hope the mice did not do too much damage to Rowley’s figures! Club member Ian Sheppard was in attendance with the Tank Museum Volunteers and we also had some of Ian Reece’s models out on display.

The event itself was spread throughout the Hurst Community College campus, with the main hall and gym housing most of the exhibits but with separate rooms for the boat displays and train layouts. The Basingstoke Model Areo Club made great use of the dry spells and took their amazing collection of remote controlled aircraft out for a spin on the fields either side of the buildings.

The highlight of the day for me was finally seeing Philip Warren’s Matchstick Fleet. I had read about this on the BBC website some months ago and was mightily impressed with the achievement, however the collection was even more magnificent when viewed in person. In total there are over 400 ships and 1,200 aeroplanes, each one made out of matchsticks over a 60 year period.

Despite the poor weather it was a busy day and there was a steady stream of visitors walking through the halls. Once again the Club members were kept quite busy talking about our models and the techniques we use and some of us even managed to find some time for a little model construction! Overall it was a very enjoyable day and another show we are already looking forward to returning to.
