Show Report: Scale ModelWorld 2011

As it is November, it must be Scale ModelWorld, the self proclaimed ‘biggest and nest model show in the world’. This year’s show was held on the 12th and 13th November at the Telford International Centre as usual. With over 150 traders and 170 exhibitors spanning 3 large halls SMW really lives up to its billing and is the show to attend for all modellers.

Newbury Scale Model Club headed up on Friday afternoon to get our tables set up ahead of the normal Saturday morning rush. We arrived at 5pm and were pretty much done within 15 minutes which gave us an opportunity to look around the halls and get orientated for the weekend. Most traders were already set up and some were even selling kits! Wonderland Models specifically had some very attractive offers and were very busy for the whole weekend.

After a good curry on the Friday night we were ready to go for the main event on Saturday. We arrived at TIC at about 7.50am on the Saturday morning and parked up without queuing or problems, and were able to get straight into the halls to finish setting up the tables. The venue soon started getting busy as more exhibitors and traders arrived and with general IPMS members being allowed in from 9.

Apart from the queues in the Kit Swap, the day flew by and we all managed to pick up a few bargains, necessary consumables and total impulse purchases from around the halls. All the traders seemed to be busy and all the NewMod 2012 confirmed traders said that they were having a good day. Before we knew it, it was 6pm and time to clear out for the day, tired of feet and lighter of pocket.

Sunday was also a busy day, but there was nowhere near the number of visitors around which made it an ideal day to look around the many Club and SIG stands as well as the competition entries and admire the many exceptional builds on display — have a look at the show photos below, or over in the gallery pages.

Overall the Club enjoyed a great weekend away and we’re already looking forward to (and saving up for!) next year.

Competition success at Scale ModelWorld 2011

Congratulations to Club Member Mal Linton-Auteis who collected a ‘Commended’ certificate for his F-16I Sufa in Class 12 at the IPMS Scale ModelWorld 2011 model competition. This is the 1/48 scale Kinetic kit painted in Tamiya and Vallejo paints, finished with Flory Models wash. Have a look at Mal’s model below.

Competition success at Abingdon Model Show

Congratulations to Club Members Ian Sheppard, Dave Atkinson and Kevin Clingham for their success in this year’s Abingdon Model Show modelling competition. Kevin collected a Silver and Ian a Commended in Class 4, 1/35 scale or larger military vehicles, Dave won Gold and Bronze in Class 9, Figures, and Ian picked up Gold in Class 10, Dioramas. The day’s success was completed with Ian being awarded ‘Best in Show’ for his Japanese tank diorama.

Competition success at Colours

Congratulations to Club Members Kevin Clingham, Ian Sheppard and Mal Linton-Auteis for their wins in the modelling and painting competitions at this year’s Colours show. In the Saturday model competition, Kevin picked up first and second place in Class 2 (single large scale military vehicle), Mal was awarded first place in Class 4 (single large scale aircraft) and Ian collected first place in Class 6 (miscellaneous). In the Sunday painting competition Ian had a clean sweep of first, second and third in Class 6 (diorama). The weekend’s success was completed with Kevin picking up the ‘Best in Show’ award for his impressive Bergepanther.

Show Report: Cholsey Model Mania 2011

As now seems customary NSMC headed off at the end of July to attend Cholsey Model Mania. Now in its 14th year, Cholsey Model Mania is an eclectic mix of all things modelling. As well as displays of scale plastic models, there are model railways, remote controlled aircraft, cars and tanks, doll’s houses and steam engines all vying for your attention. This wide selection of attractions, coupled by great weather, really pulled in the visiting public, however it did feel that the number of exhibitors and traders present were slightly lower than last year.

NSMC had a great table and location near the show entrance which we filled with models from Mal Linton-Auteis, Kevin Clingham, Ian Reece, Dave Atkinson, Richard Dawes and Ian Shumsky, all of whom were at our tables to discuss their models. Ian Sheppard and the Tank Museum Volunteer Modellers were also in attendance as usual.

One of the highlights of the Cholsey show is the traditional fly past and this year was no different with a C-47 Skytrain gracing the skies above the show. The low-level pass even allowed a brief glimpse of a waving ‘officer’ through the open side door!

Competition success at IPMS Avon Model Show

Congratulations to Club Member Ian Sheppard for his second place in the Armour Class at the IPMS Avon Model Show yesterday. Ian’s refuelling Tiger was up against some great models and was a worthy winner. We’ll have photos and a full show report up within a few days.

Show Report: Salisbury 2011

The Salisbury IPMS model show is a great little event held in the gym of a local school. Club members Ian Shumsky, Mal Linton-Auteis, Kevin Clingham and Richard Dawes braved an early start to get to the venue early and start setting up the stand for what would prove to be a busy day. Ian Sheppard was also present with the Tank Museum Volunteer Modellers.

As mentioned the show was held in a local school, with the traders and exhibitors concentrated in the gym hall. There was a great selection of clubs with a wide range of models, scales and styles. There were also a good mix of traders who all seemed to be doing a brisk trade with both the exhibitors and the visiting public. As always it was great to catch up with many friends, as well as meet new modellers.

Show Report: Hendon 2011

The Hendon Scale Model Show was held at The RAF Museum London on 22nd May. This was the first time NSMC had been invited so we were a little unsure what to expect. Upon arrival we were guided to our 3 large tables and were left speechless at the fantastic venue for the show. All the model exhibitors were paced right beside the Museum’s historic exhibits with a great view of many of the aircraft we model.

Unfortunately we hardly had time to view the full-sized versions of the aircraft as the show itself was busy with both modellers and members of the public attending the Museum and stumbling upon the Model Show.

May Club meeting update

May’s Club meeting was dominated by Les Taylor’s entertaining and informative presentation on the Normandy Landings and the Newbury Connection. We had an excellent attendance for the talk, including members of other local modelling clubs and The Royal British Legion, as well as our own club members. We concluded the meeting with the presentation of a donation of £250 to The Royal British Legion.

Les’ talk lasted a little under 90 minutes which did not leave much time for formal Club activities, however, and as usual, there were many lively conversations on models and other subjects. As always there were a great collection of models to look over as you can see in the photos below!

Show Report: Poole Vikings 2011

Following the work in running NewMod 2011, it was a nice change of pace to head south towards Bournemouth for Poole Viking’s 2011 show. The Poole Vikings show is one of the furthest we travel to, but there were no issues on the roads and Club members Ian Shumsky and Mal Linton-Auteis arrived at about 8.30 to set up the stand and get the models on display. We were later joined by Richard Dawes and Ian Sheppard was also present with the Tank Museum Volunteer Modellers.

The show was held in a local school, with the main display areas distributed between the hall, cafeteria and reception area, with a few traders down a corridor on the outside of the hall. There was a good mix of Clubs, displays and traders and as always it was great to catch up with many friends, as well as meet new some new modellers.

There seemed to be quite a steady stream of visitors to the show through the morning, but this did tail off a bit after lunch. The show halls were also a bit cramped with not much space either between tables or for the public to walk around, though that did not stop anyone from having a good look around and admiring the models on the displays. In an interesting approach many of the competition models were left on the club stands and while this no doubt made the judging more difficult it did make the displays more interesting with the best models on view. The best in show was awarded to an intricately detailed ship which took the builder over 6 months to rig.

Show Report: NewMod 2011

On April 2^nd Newbury Scale Model Club held NewMod 2011, our second scale model exhibition. In a change of venue, this year’s show was held at Park House School in Newbury and was attended by around 500 people, including traders, exhibitors and the visiting public.

We made full use of the venue, with the 45 stands spread over the main hall, gym, 6^th form common room and cafeteria. As well as the many model displays there was an active war game run by the Newbury and Reading Wargames Society, figure painting demonstrations by the Bristol BMSS and active Airfix ‘make and take’ table.

Congratulations to the Thames Valley Scale Model Club on being voted ‘Best Club Stand’ and to Phill Brookes and Alex Long for their ‘Best in Show’ award for their ‘Sidetracked’ diorama. We’ll be posting details of the other competition results in the next few days.

By the end of the day we managed to raise £250 for the Royal British Legion, so thank you to all traders, exhibitors and visitors for making the day a great success.
