As the show is held in a school, space can be limited, but this year NSMC had two 6 foot tables in the main hall area which became home to a selection of armour, helicopters, figures and cars from Club members John Cooper, Dave Atkinson, Ian Sheppard and Ian Shumsky. The hall was also shared with several other local clubs including Early Risers and Abingdon IPMS, as well as a large gauge model railway which was very popular with the children. The main hall is also where the WI ran the refreshments, including their bacon butties — a far too enticing aroma first thing in the morning!

Outside of the main hall, all the classroom space was put to good use with traders and exhibitors occupying every room so there was always something different to see as you wonder around. As usual, the Tank Museum volunteers had a great display, accompanied through the rooms by more plastic scale models, scale boats, steam engines, doll’s houses and a large army of Warhammer 40k Space Marines and Space Orks.

There didn’t seem to be too many traders at this year’s show, but there were still some interesting kits to be had and none of the Club members walked away empty handed. I think we may be seeing a lot more 1/72 scale helicopters from other members to join John’s collection!

At the rear of the show, the school playground and playing fields were put to good use by the larger scale modellers and enthusiasts. There were several steam traction engines driving around trying not to run over the large scale radio controlled tanks! Overhead the radio controlled aircraft were putting on a good show and warming up the crowds for the now-traditional fly past, which unfortunately NSMC managed to miss!

Once again, the show was well organised and NSMC were made to feel very welcome. We are already looking forward to next year’s event! Have a look at the photos over on the Cholsey Model Mania page in our Gallery section.

This will allow Dave to get the tickets into the post on Wednesday morning and give the PO enough time to deliver them!

As well as the usual activities, tonight will be quiz night with prizes for the winning team!

Also, please bear in mind that there is a dress code enforced within the Royal British Legion organisation, and the Newbury Scale Model Club asks all of its members and visitors to comply with this rule. Casual dress is OK, however track suits, lounging suits and shorts are not allowed.

As usual, please bring any models you may have that are either finished or in progress. These always provide a great talking point once the formal Club activities are complete.

Just so everyone knows what to expect, here are the quiz details:

• No more than three people in a team.
• Each teams must have a name. The team with the best* name (as decided by the quiz master) will be awarded a bonus prize. *best could be amusing, topical, satirical, etc.
• There will be a total of 6 rounds as follows:
  • “Top Marks” 30 question picture round
  • “Hollywood Is Hell” 10 question quiz round
  • “Up Your Street” 10 question quiz round
  • “Follow The Instructions” 10 question quiz round
  • “Stephen Fry Up” 10 question quiz round
  • “Extra Time” 10 question equalizer round
• Before the questions start, teams can nominate one of the 4 quiz rounds to play their Joker on. Playing the Joker will double the points scored in that round.
• The equalizer round has a bonus question which will be worth 10 points.
• The final score will be out of 100. If any team scores 100 points, they will win a bonus prize.
• After all rounds the team with the highest number of points will be the winner and can select any three kits from the club stash as a prize.
• If more than one team on equal highest points there will be a tie breaker question asked of one of the team members as chosen by the team. The first team that answers correctly will be the winners. Losing teams in the tie breaker will be awarded a bonus prize.

Teams should be no more than 3 people and the winning team can select up to three kits from the Club stash. The quiz itself will be held over 6 rounds, comprising of 1 picture round, 4 question rounds and an ‘equaliser’ round. More details will be posted nearer the time.
