Once the formal element was complete we enjoyed some quite energetic discussions on new models on the market, the in-progress and completed models brought along to the meeting and tips and techniques to get the best out of our kits. As always there was a great collection of models to look over as you can see in the photos below.

As Poole is a bit of a trek from Berkshire, the car was packed on Friday night ahead of an anticipated early start on Saturday morning. The weather changed somewhat overnight and it was a wet, cool and misty start to the 90 mile trip down the A34, M3, M27 and A31, but traffic was light and the journey quick and uneventful.

We were set up by about 9.30 and already had a couple of bargains bought and stashed away before the show opened and the public came in. There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and it did feel much busier than last year, despite the heavy rain. Certainly a few of the traders reported good sales and seemed happy at the end of the day.

The competition at Poole is a little different to most in that entered models remain on the Club tables and are judged ‘in situ’. I think this, combined with the cheap entry costs (£1 for 5 submissions) means that a lot of models are entered into the competition and the quality is very high. This year’s ‘Best of Show’ award went to Andy Argent for his fantastic ‘Blissful Ignorance’ diorama, a worthy winner.

In many ways the success of the show is also its only problem. Space in the two halls is very limited with little room between display tables. It is very difficult to walk around as if someone stops to look at a model, everyone stops! The school does have a new cafeteria area which would be perfect for the show, unfortunately they will not let Poole Vikings use it.

Despite the cramped exhibition halls, it was still a great day out and a perfect way to round off the Easter period. We’re already looking forward to next year!
